first freeze

It’s predicted that tomorrow morning we’ll wake up to temperatures hovering around 30 degrees Fahrenheit…  We set the time back Sunday morning, effectively cutting out the after-work daylight for most of us…  It’s in the air, in the sky, in our bones…the slow slide into winter, working up to the Solstice, the day when the sun begins to return.

I brought in the last, honest-to-goodness final, cuttings of basil and made some basil butter—just chop the basil and whip it into softened butter.  The sage was trimmed up and made into smudge sticks, handy for warding off demonic spirits…DSC_0006

 

But we’re still growing here…fires are keeping us warm inside and I’ve started seriously planning for next year.

I wrote the above on Thursday…  As we’ve continued to put away the garden, I’m less and less inclined to blog.  Oh, I could dazzle you with my fascinating take on houseplants, and I may visit and photograph some Botanical Gardens this winter, but mostly I’ll be keeping you informed with The News from Sonnystone Acres.   The holidays will be upon us before we know it and this year marks Casey’s 60th birthday, so festivities will be especially festive this season.

Movin’ right along

Good morning!

During these yowly-cat, dog days of summer, I’ve sweated off a few lbs. moving around my herbs.  I decided to go ahead and bring them to the front porch, mostly so I could enjoy the fragrance and admire their flowers.  As an added boost, the light out there is wonderful for pictures, especially in the evenings.  I was most anxious to get the pineapple sage moved, as it had grown much larger than expected and was bullying my blueberry bush; I figured it was only good sense to also pot up the common sage, as well.  Here’s a before-and-after, sort of.

I love pineapple sage, but it doesn’t keep its fruity flavor/aroma after it’s dried.  My plan is to use it fresh for now and later for potpourri, though it’s going to be tough finding the necessary fixatives without hobby lobby…thank-you, Lord, for the internets.  And doesn’t it look great out on the front porch?

My tomatoes have nearly All given in to the fusilarium now, so they’ll probably be pulled up Labor Day, which makes me feel a little defeated.  But hey, let’s dwell on the positive, right?

And don’t forget the flowers..they’re always a comfort…

The edible garden is planted…

What a beautiful week-end!  It was super-productive for us, also…

I love that exhausted feeling after a full day of planting, sitting on the back porch looking out at the lush, green that will now grow…

3 Better Boy, 2 Roma, 2 Husky Cherry, 1 Sweet 100 tomatoes

6 bell peper

3 yellow squash, 2 zucchini

pole beans, bush beans, sugar snap peas

10 Basil

1 oregano

cayenne pepper, cilantro, tomatillo

pearly thyme

arugula, buttercrunch lettuce

pineapple sage, honeydew sage, common sage

lemon grass, lemon verbena, lemon mint (melissa)

geranium, marigold, black-eyed Susan vine

Spring planting is my favorite part…well, eating the fruits of the planting is almost as satisfying…but never again do I have the control that I have in the Spring.  Soon enough the symmetry is spoiled and I move this and add that to cover the open spot or cut back the overgrowth, but today we all just sit hopefully, enjoying right where we are…

Before the Deluge…

Spring gave us a deadline..again…  Knowing that the Rains would arrive around Thursday, we started planting…

I am pretty excited about my new lavender hedge:

18 hidcote lavender 12inches apart around a 7×7 bed.  I didn’t feel adventurous enough to try a knot, but I think it will make a fragrant hedge for pineapple sage and whatever else ends up growing there.

The peas are doing wonderfully, so we planted a new row and decided to let the zucchini and yellow squash sink or swim…

The tomatoes are making themselves at home—that’s 2 better boys, 1 early girl, 2 la romas, and 2 sweet cherry 100’s.  I’m still not sure where the red huskies are going to stay, so they’re still on the porch with the herbs and more tender plants that wouldn’t like the soon-to-be 40-degree temps.

The beautiful weather kept us outside for the first part of the week, and we had it pretty much under control when the relentless clouds and cold came back carrying copious amounts of rain.

 The cloudy rainy days have at least gotten warmer, and really the garden doesn’t mind.  I’m still anxious to get out and get at it…
